In this series I look at the boundary review, and create some boundaries of my own in order to investigate whether it really is so divisive, with the help of the fantastic boundary review website. The first region I wish to look into is the North West.
You can see the boundaries I create by going on the Plan Builder website, and importing the code below into the North West section (click create a plan and then import plan.) There you can see the boundaries I have created. Each constituency is listed at the side and by clicking each one you can see the electoral wards contained in each, although clicking on the map can change the constituencies, which are coloured by party based on notional figures from Electoral Calculus.
Doing the North West not only showed a great divide in political makeup, but also in the existing constituencies, with Cheshire, Southern Lancashire (St Helens and Wigan) and Manchester having constituencies which fit the new quotas, unlike Cumbria, North and West Lancashire, the areas bordering the Peak District and Merseyside.
The Tories would notionally take Southport from the Lib Dems due to it extending eastwards to become a new Southport and Rufford seat. Similarly, Hyndburn becomes more rural and goes Tory by 7 votes. Even this is not the most marginal seat, with David Nuttall notionally holding on to the Bury seat by two. Lancaster and Fleetwood also goes Tory, and the Pendle seat now includes Clitheroe to become Clitheroe and Colne, strengthening the Tory hold. Weaver Vale, which would become Northwich is even stronger for the Tories, and unlike the real review, George Osborne has a Wilmslow and Knutsford seat with a majority of over 10,000.
In Cumbria, where Labour have half the seats now, they would only have one (the safe Workington and Whitehaven.) Tim Farron is safe but his majority is cut to around 5,000 due to the removal of the Western Lakes in favour of Westmorland. Carlisle is now a Tory seat by 7,000 votes.
Some things never change, with every Liverpool and Manchester seat going Labour, strengthened by their taking of Bolton West by nearly 3,000, and having two safe seats in the Stockport area (Stockport West, and Marple, Denton and Hyde.) The other Stockport seat is Stockport East, which includes Hazel Grove and is a Con/Lab marginal, and with George Osborne's seat taking Bramhall and Heald Green, the Lib Dem presence is lost forever.
The Greens would keep second in Liverpool Riverside, but nowhere else, and UKIP are still second in lots of seat, and have a target in Heywood and Middleton.
From this we can see, that in many areas, towns like Accrington that originally had their own constituency are having to expand, and this benefits the Tories heavily. The Lib Dem benefit of local strongholds is lost. Interestingly, in urban areas the pattern is reversed: Stockport and Birkenhead are split into two, and
