There is just 1 by-election in in the last week of August. So far there are 17 during September including a "double" election together with another 10 in October, 7 of which are in Scotland. In addition there are a further 10 known or impending vacancies, all but 2 in England. Currently 24 of the total 87 contests and vacancies occuring since the general election are as a result of the resignations of the sitting councillors as they are now MPs.
